Teaching to the Objective

Introduction/Motivation/

Prior Knowledge:

Begin by asking the students if they have ever heard of Geoffrey Chaucer or Canterbury Tales.

Canterbury Tales is about 30 pilgrims who are on a pilgrimage to Thomas  A’ Becket’s shrine and the tales they tell on their way there. Quick write: What is a pilgrimage? What do you think some tales people tell on a pilgrimage would be about?

Have a few students share.

Developmental Activities:

Students will take turns reading aloud the prologue.

I will be listing the setting and the characters on the board based on the suggestions from the students.

Assessment: Were the students participating in the discussion or was I leading the discussion more?

Closure:

Have the students copy what is on the board and explain their homework assignment which is to retell the prologue in their own words. Remind them that we will be starting the actual tales the next time in class. Also take any questions that students have about the assignment or the prologue itself.

Differentiation:  Required for each section.

All students are required to participate and discuss. I will be walking around the room to see if any student needs help or does not understand the quick write.

All students will be given a handout at the end of class that will have the elements of the setting and a list of the characters and character traits.

Follow-up: Homework will be to retell the prologue in his/ her own words. Make sure students have a copy of the handout on character list and elements of the setting.
