Goal for Understanding: Students will be able to read and interpret literature effectively.

Instructional Objective:  Students will read The Wife of Bath’s Tale and identify her ideas about life and marriage from the story and compare them to those of the time period.

Teaching to the Objective

 

Introduction/Motivation/

Prior Knowledge:

 

 

Begin by asking students to write down what his/ her own idea of marriage is.

 

 

Have a couple students share.

 

 

 

 

Developmental Activities:

Students will take turns reading the Wife of Bath’s Tale aloud.

There will be a class discussion after the reading

 

Students will list three ideas from The Wife of Bath’s Tale on a piece of loose leaf paper.

Compare them to the ideas that were held in that time period. Are the ideas similar or different? How?

 

 

Assessment: Did every student hand in their paper?

 

Closure:  

Call the class together and ask if there are any questions. Assign their homework for the night. Pass out worksheet with the elements of the Wife of Bath’s Tale. Pass out handout of the ideas held in the Renaissance Period.

 

 

Differentiation

 

 

All students will be required to participate and discuss. I will be walking around the room and answering any questions students have after the reading and before the assignment.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Students that are not clear on the material have an option to work with another student that can help them.

 

 

 

I will be offering to have a small group in the back of the classroom to work on the assignment with me for anyone who is not clear on the material.

 

 

 

 

 

I will be handing out a worksheet for those who are visual learners.

 

 

 

Follow-up: Homework will be to write a 1-2 page paper. The topic of the paper will be the ideas of the Renaissance vs. the ideas of the Wife of Bath. Paper should be double spaced, written in 12 font, Times New Roman, and should list specific examples from the text at least five.

 

 

 

 

Materials: Pen, Pencil, paper, chalk, chalk board, copy of Canterbury Tales

 

Teacher made handout on the setting and the characters, and elements of the Wife of Bath’s Tale and also a handout on the ideas of the Renaissance Period.
